Texans for a Secure Retirement is asking its members to send a letter to lawmakers urging them to oppose three bills proposed this legislative session that could become pension busters.

The nonprofit group created a petition on, an online platform that allows organizers to publish petitions to the public. The TSR is asking the public to vote against three bills that will place public employees across the state “to the whims of voters who do not know how defined benefit pension work,” according to the petition.

The three bills opposed by the TSR are Senate Bill 152, which would allow cities to vote on changing retirement benefits for public employees from defined benefits to defined contribution plans; SB 1752, which focuses on moving new hires only to defined contribution plans; and SB 2190, a bill proposed to fix funding issues among Houston's police, fire, and municipal pension systems but could see a defined contribution clause added to it.

According to the TSR's petition site, “These bills are dangerous experiments that will affect new employees, people who currently pay into pension funds and retirees. Fire Fighters, Police and Public workers would no longer have a say in the benefits they receive, even though they were promised set benefits when they were hired. It's like having voters determine your salary after you are hired.”
