TLFFRA Expands Annual Conference With First Accredited Basic Trustee Training
Retirement fund trustees, administrators, and industry professionals from across Texas will gather in Harlingen this fall for the Texas Local Fire Fighters Retirement Act Education Foundation’s 2026 Educational Conference.
The conference is scheduled for Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 4-6, at the Hilton Garden Inn Harlingen Convention Center, 751 Harlingen Heights Drive.
This year’s gathering will begin with a milestone for the organization. On Saturday, Oct. 3, TLFFRA will offer its first Basic Trustee Training program, providing accredited educational hours that meet the Texas Pension Review Board’s Minimum Educational Training standards.
The training expands TLFFRA’s educational programming and provides new and experienced trustees with another opportunity to complete state-required education while attending the organization’s annual conference.
Texas law requires trustees and system administrators of public retirement systems to complete education in seven core areas established by the Pension Review Board. Those subjects include fiduciary matters, governance, ethics, investments, actuarial matters, benefits administration, and risk management.
TLFFRA’s Basic Trustee Training program is expected to address those foundational responsibilities while also reflecting the practical needs of locally administered public retirement systems.
The TLFFRA Education Foundation has supported trustee education since 2007 through conferences, regional workshops, lectures, and other programs. Its educational efforts are designed to help pension board members better understand their fiduciary obligations, strengthen governance practices, and make informed decisions on behalf of members and retirees.
The Oct. 4-6 conference will build on that mission with presentations and discussions concerning retirement system administration, governance, and oversight. A complete conference agenda and additional program information will be released by TLFFRA.
All retirement funds are welcome to attend either the Oct. 3 Basic Trustee Training or the Oct. 4-6 Educational Conference. Attendance is not limited to firefighter retirement systems.
In addition to formal education, the gathering will give trustees, administrators, and professional service providers an opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss shared challenges, and build relationships with colleagues from retirement systems across Texas.
