Texas House Speaker Announces Appointments to Sunset Advisory Commission
House Speaker Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont, recently announced his appointments to the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission, which determines when state agencies will be abolished if the Legislature doesn't act to extend them.
The lieutenant governor and the speaker of the House appoint the Commission members, who consist of five senators, five representatives, and two members of the public.
Phelan's recent appointments:
- Rep. Justin Holland, R-Rockwall
- Rep. Keith Bell, R-Forney, who will complete the term of Rep. John Cyrier, R.-Lockhart, who is stepping down from the Commission
- Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg
- Rep. Travis Clardy, R-Nacogdoches
- Jeff Austin III, a public member with Austin Bank

It's the Sunset Advisory Commission staff that evaluates agencies and makes recommendations for changes. The Commission hears public testimony and makes recommendations to the entire Legislative Assembly for changes.
