Election Results Bring New Faces to the Texas' 89th Legislative Session

The results are in, and we're getting ready for some changes in the upcoming 89th Legislative Session, which kicks off on Jan. 14, 2025.

Bill Pre-Filing Begins Soon

With bill pre-filing starting on Nov. 12, 2024, lawmakers are preparing for the first steps in shaping Texas' next legislative agenda. The 89th Session will see a mix of seasoned legislators and a significant group of newcomers bringing fresh perspectives.

House and Senate Composition

Based on unofficial election results from the Texas Secretary of State, here is a breakdown of the Senate and House splits:

  • Texas Senate: 20 Republicans and 11 Democrats
  • Texas House: 88 Republicans and 62 Democrats

The Senate is set to maintain its 31 districts, each representing an average of 940,178 Texans. In the House, the 150 districts each represent an average of 194,303 Texans, based on the 2020 Census population.

Fresh Faces in the 89th Legislative Session

The upcoming Session will see some new members stepping into legislative roles. Here's what we know so far:

  • Texas Senate: 3 freshmen members
    • 2 Republicans
    • 1 Democrat
  • Texas House: 32 freshmen members
    • 26 Republicans
    • 6 Democrats
